Politics and Social Media
We live in a technological age, dominated by social media sites. We all know what they are, and we all use them (some of us more than others). I personally LOVE twitter. It is without question my favourite social media site. The reason I like it so much, is because it is simple, and to the point. You get 140 characters, and that’s it. None of this posting 50 albums of 200 photos, playing 25 different games, and endless likes, pokes and comments. On twitter you can tweet, message or retweet. That’s it! The other benefit to twitter is the fact that famous and important people have taken to the site to share their thoughts. It has become an especially relevant medium for politics and campaigning, and I am dying to see the role it will play in the next Canadian and American elections.
So for today, I thought I would compile a list of some important political figures on twitter, who I think are useful to follow for those that may be interested. And if you don’t have twitter, you should go sign up. It seems weird at first, but once you’re used to it, I think you’ll like it.
Stephen Harper: @pmharper (verified)
-Likely not actually Harper tweeting (at least not all of the tweets), but it is spoken in first person, and tweets multiple times a day. Harper also has a french equivalent.
Michael Ignatieff: M_Ignatieff (verified)
-Somewhat new to twitter, Ignatieff’s twitter is used for voices congratulations & condolences, as well as opposing the current government. Ignatieff also has a french equivalent.
Jack Layton: @jacklayton
-Quite active, and in a first person tone, but likely not Layton actually tweeting them all. As with the others, a french equivalent is available.
Elizabeth May: @elizabethmay
-The Green Party leader has a sense of humour, which sometimes comes out on twitter, and she of course also criticizes the government.
Bob Rae: @bobraeMP
-Rae has a decent twitter account. He generally uses it as a voice of opposition against the government.
For a more extensive list of Canadian politicians on twitter, you can visit the following site.
Barack Obama: @BarackObama (verified)
-The president is very active on the site, but of course his tweets are not done by him (he even admitted it). Some of the tweets actually very interesting to read, and more informal than his normal manner of speaking. He quite often uses it to push his agenda or ask for support.
Sarah Palin: @SarahPalinUSA (verified)
-Palin seems to enjoy her twitter account, and I feel as though Palin herself is actually composing most of the messages. She doesn’t hold back, and always has an interesting opinion.
John Boehner: @johnboehner (verified)
-Boehner is an active, twittering politician. He enjoys retweeting statements by Democrats, that support his ideas.
John McCain: @SenJohnMcCain (verified)
-For an old dude, McCain is a darn good tweeter (or he has a good staff to help him tweet). Quite active, and adds his own personal thoughts.
Oh, and btw, I think you should also go and follow TOP on twitter too! @TheOrdinaryPoli
